"National Standards" results meant parents were more aware of when their child needed extr

One of the most important things a parent can do in monitoring their child's academic progress is to understand the levels of achievement on school reports.

While I didn't agree with a lot of things about "National Standards", the one thing that it did enable was making parents transparently aware of whether their child was "falling behind" and needed extra help in numeracy and/or literacy. This was very clear on school reports. It meant parents reached out for help in a timely manner.

Remembering that learning is not a straight line, and different children will have different speeds of learning different subjects and be at different levels of understanding for different topics, it can be said that in general the content of each Curriculum Level is learnt over two school years right up until Year 11 when it becomes one curriculum level each year.

A child in :

Year 1 and 2 - covers work at Curriculum Level 1

Year 3 and 4 - covers work at Curriculum Level 2

Year 5 and 6 - covers work at Curriculum Level 3

Year 7 and 8 - covers work at Curriculum Level 4

Year 9 and 10 - covers work at Curriculum Level 5

Year 11 - covers work at Curriculum Level 6

E-asTTle Tests have the following three stages of progression:

B for Basic (at the start of the learning level)

P for Proficient (half way through the learning level)

A for Advanced (at the top of the learning level).

Year 1 and 2 - 1B, 1P, 1A

Year 3 and 4 - 2B, 2P, 2A

Year 5 and 6 - 3B, 3P, 3A

Year 7 and 8 - 4B, 4P, 4A

Year 9 and 10 - 5B, 5P, 5A

For example, a code 3A means achievement at Level 3 content and ready to begin Level 4 content and most students will be at this level around the end of Year 6 and beginning of Year 7 and some students will be ahead and others will be slightly behind. However, if your child is a 2B and is in Year 6 then they might need extra help.

Mathematics is a subject that requires adding on knowledge in layers. If a student does not understand one layer then it is very difficult for them to understand the next layer. And very quickly they can find they are struggling.

Sometimes help is available in schools and sometimes parents seek tutor help outside of school.
